Depression VS. Workout |
| 9/22/2009 7:04:35 PM |

When my girlfriend was having a hard time with her daughter battling depression we met regularly to come up with solutions. We met many, many times and discussed various alternatives. One idea was that her daughter see a counselor. The results were a diagnosis of severe depression and a prescription for medication.
I noticed one day while hanging out at her home that her daughter sat in a dark room watching movies. A few ideas came to mind as I watched her mope around the house. First of all get some sunshine, open those curtains and let it pour in! Secondly, get up and move! I offered to take her to the gym and workout. This suggestion was met with an absolute NO. After some doing and lots of effort I did get her daughter to join me at a workout. The change did not come quickly or easily but she learned to like and even look forward to our workout sessions. We started slow with only two days a week. At one point she gingerly asked if I'd like to add another day to our workout. I eagerly agreed and encouraged her enthusiasm.
Today, my girlfriends daughter has several Fitness Instructor certifications. She is an avid workout queen and strongly advocates movement as opposed to chemicals for the treatment of depression! |
